Metabolic Madness

Secondary ProgramsOnsite & Outreach

This program utilises state-of-the-art technology to assess VO2 max.

This experience utilises latest in research grade technology, the Cortex Metamax 3B to perform a VO2 Max test for a nominated student. This allows for the precise measurement and live data recording of the following markers; oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, ventilation, heart rate, breath rate and fuel utilisation (fats and carbohydrates).

Students will:

  • Collect vital signs, including blood pressure, vital capacity, heart rate and core temperature for analysis.
  • Observe lab-based fitness testing
  • Conduct data analysis of live athlete data

Learning Intention:

To understand respiratory gas exchange and fuel utilisation in the human body.

Success Criteria:

  • Define VO2 Maximum and energy system interplay.
  • Calculate the athlete’s relative VO2 Max result.
  • Interpret the relative contribution of Fats and Carbohydrates at different exercise intensities.
  • Illustrate the relationship between oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production.
