Sports Chemistry

Secondary ProgramsOnsite

Macro and micronutrients are paramount to the success of athletes.

Sports Chemistry highlights the depth of science that goes into numerous sports nutrition products that are on the market today.

Students will use their problem-solving skills, micro pipetting and spectroscopy techniques to prepare standards, determine a standard curve and apply their results to reveal nutrient content of samples.

Students will:

  • Determine the concentration of a sports supplement and three milk alternatives using analytical chemistry techniques.
  • Make recommendations to athletes based on findings.

Learning Intention:

To use the results from protein standards of known concentration to construct a calibration curve and determine the concentration of supplement and milk samples of unknown concentration.

Success Criteria:

  • Demonstrate practical techniques related to analytical chemistry.
  • Construct a calibration curve from the absorbance results of protein standards of known concentrations.
  • Determine diluted concentrations of supplements and milk samples of unknown concentration from the calibration curve.
  • Calculate the undiluted concentrations of supplements and milk samples of unknown concentrations.
  • Evaluate the validity of using the calibration curve to determine the concentrations of the unknown samples.
  • Evaluate whether any of the milk samples are a suitable replacement for the sports supplement based on protein content and a variety of other factors.
