Sporty Maths

Primary ProgramsOnsite & Outreach

Sporty Maths is all about mathematics in action. Students will participate in physical activity to generate mathematical data sets utilising our state-of-the-art technologies.

Students will be hands on with our latest Fitlight Reaction Time Technology.  Using their own primary data results, students will learn how to round decimal numbers using an open number line. The program encourages students to take a more fluid and flexible approach to solving problems, while developing a better number sense. Students enjoy developing a deeper understanding of the logical reasoning behind rounding decimal numbers, rather than blindly following an abstract ‘rule’.

Students will:

  • Recap on the essential language around place value, particularly tenths, hundredths and thousandths
  • Recap on the link between decimals, fractions and percentages
  • Use technology to collect data about their own reaction time – accurate to a thousandth of a second
  • Create an open number line based on their results
  • Use an open number line to round their own decimal results from thousandths to the nearest hundredth
  • Develop an understanding of the prevalence of mathematics in sport. In particular, they will see that the maths they are learning at this age has very strong real-world links to the sport they watch on TV.

Learning Intention:

To understand how to round decimal numbers using an open number line.

Success Criteria:

  • Collect primary data from reaction time experiments.
  • Use a number line to represent primary data.
  • Complete rounding of data from thousandths to hundredths of a second.
