The Winning Edge

Secondary Programs@ Deakin

This program is designed to give students a hands-on introduction to university and research level anatomy, physiology and biomechanics.

The Winning Edge is run from the state-of-the-art School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences at Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds Campus. It introduces students to exercise, health and medical science career pathways.

Students will experience cutting edge technologies allowing them to measure force, gait analysis, predictive VO2 max and power. They use anatomical terms and models to further investigate the human body.

Students will:

  • Learn anatomical terms and positions, and Strength & Conditioning lab.
  • Use biomechanics and technology to analyse performance.
  • Complete Physiology lab with sub-maximal testing.
  • Explore career pathway opportunities.

Learning Intention:

To understand how human performance is analysed at a tertiary level.

Success Criteria:

  • Describe a synovial joint action and demonstrate two exercises used to strengthen and train this joint.
  • Measure at least two angles (°) of an athlete’s running motion using computer software.
  • Compare peak walking v’s running forces and use this data to calculate the impact on the human body.
  • Calculate predictive relative and absolute VO2 Max results from completing the ‘Astrand’ protocol.
